What Is This Studios has announced the upcoming launch of their trading card game, “What Is This Sorcery?” (WITS), on the SKALE blockchain network. This also marks WITS as the first Web3 gaming project to receive backing from Kickstarter.
WITS Blends Tangible Card Collecting with Digital Gameplay
WITS distinguishes itself by blending tangible card collecting with digital gameplay. Central to this integration is the use of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Each physical card is embedded with an NFC chip, enabling players to authenticate ownership, execute trades with a simple tap, and incorporate their cards into online battles effortlessly. This approach enhances the collectibility of the cards. It also ensures a fluid transition between the physical and digital facets of the game.
The game’s Kickstarter campaign, which runs until March 6, 2025, aims to fund the production of WITS’ inaugural physical card set and foster the growth of its burgeoning community.
Backers are offered exclusive perks, including limited-edition collectibles, early access to gameplay, and unique rewards. The campaign’s timeline outlines surveys being sent to backers in October 2025, with production commencing in April or May 2025, and shipping slated for August or September 2025.
Strategic Partnership with SKALE Labs
The decision to launch WITS on the SKALE network is strategic. SKALE’s gas-free, high-performance blockchain infrastructure is tailored to support gaming applications, ensuring rapid transaction speeds and a seamless user experience. This partnership allows WITS to leverage SKALE’s capabilities, providing players with uninterrupted gameplay without the burden of transaction fees.
Andrew Saunders, Chief Marketing and Growth Officer at SKALE, said: “This is a revolutionary moment for both Web3 and the trading card game genre. WITS represents the next step in the evolution of Web3 gaming, and we’re thrilled to be a part of its continued development.”
The SKALE Advantage in Web3 Gaming
SKALE has rapidly emerged as a preferred platform for Web3 gaming projects. Its modular, multi-chain architecture offers developers the flexibility to create application-specific chains that are both fast and infinitely scalable. A standout feature of SKALE is its zero gas fee model, which eliminates transaction costs, allowing developers to design smooth, on-chain interactions and gameplay mechanics that rival traditional gaming experiences.
This gas-free environment is particularly advantageous for games like WITS, where frequent transactions—such as card trades, battles, and upgrades—are integral to the player experience. By removing the financial barriers associated with these transactions, SKALE enables a more engaging and accessible gaming environment.
A Growing Ecosystem of Web3 Games
WITS joins a growing list of innovative games leveraging SKALE’s infrastructure. The network boasts over 200 games in development and more than 50 million active gaming wallets. Collectively, these games have saved users over $11 billion in gas fees to date. Notably, Web3 games on SKALE have recorded higher social activity than those on competing chains, indicating a vibrant and engaged community.
Other notable partnerships include Moxy, a gaming and eSports platform founded by Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell. Moxy has partnered with SKALE to create a Web3 ecosystem featuring gasless transactions for end-users, further highlighting SKALE’s appeal in the gaming industry.
WITS prepares for its Season 0 launch on SKALE
WITS is preparing for its Season 0 launch on SKALE. The game’s unique blend of physical and digital elements, underpinned by robust blockchain technology, positions it as a potential game-changer in the trading card game genre.
Nick Grossi, CEO and Co-Founder of WITS, mentioned: “Blending digital and physical gameplay allows users to connect, create, and compete in ways never before possible. We are excited to join SKALE’s growing roster of games in the near future, and today’s launch of the Kickstarter campaign is just the beginning. We can’t wait to build this magical world together with our community.”
Overall, the collaboration between What Is This Studios and SKALE Labs exemplifies the evolving landscape of gaming, where the convergence of physical collectibles and digital experiences is becoming increasingly prevalent.
